This is all that remains of "Robinson's Tavern," once a well-known landmark on the "Military Turnpike." Completed in 1823, Robinson's was one of several public houses on this roadway and served as a stagecoach stop and inn for travelers. On July 28th, 1817, that James Monroe, the 5th President of the United States, arrived with his entourage after leaving Plattsburgh. They were treated to a celebration and feast. The money for the event had actually been intended for the purchase of a new fire engine, but it was decided that in light of the occasion the expense was warranted. Plattsburgh went another year without a fire engine.
Today, the ruins of Robinson's Tavern stand silent and empty beside the Turnpike, its thick stone walls slowly succumbing to the ravages of time. Frequently sketched, painted, and photographed, it remains a beautiful reminder of a bygone age.
